"The Whole Church taking the Whole Gospel to the Whole World"Global MovementFor more than 30 years, the Lausanne Movement has served to unite the global body of Christ in the call to world evangelization. Lausanne grew out of the 1974 International Congress on World Evangelization (Lausanne I) of some 2700 Christian leaders from 150 countries, brought together by a committee headed by Rev. Billy Graham to focus on intentional global evangelization. TIME magazine described Lausanne I as “possibly the widest-ranging meeting of Christians ever held.” Leaders at Lausanne I produced the Lausanne Covenant which is considered one of the most influential documents in recent church history. The Lausanne Covenant, the chief architect of which was Rev. Dr. John R. W. Stott, has been used more widely across the globe than any document in modern times to unite evangelicals. Hundreds of organizations use the Lausanne Covenant as their Statement of Faith and the basis for collaborative ministry. In 1989, 3600 leaders from 190 nations attended Lausanne II in Manila, Philippines. The resulting Manila Manifesto reaffirmed and expanded on the Lausanne Covenant and the call to “Proclaim Christ Until He Comes.” Subsequent Lausanne gatherings have continued to help unite Christian leaders worldwide by providing a place for theological and practical discussions on the salient issues impacting the urgent task of reaching lost people with the love and grace of Jesus Christ. The Lausanne Movement has been the catalyst for the establishment of national and regional movements and initiatives that are bringing the Church together for comprehensive, culture-specific evangelization. The men and women of Lausanne actively address issues such as the uniqueness of Christ in a postmodern world, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the persecuted Church, evangelizing children and young people, evangelizing and discipling oral cultures, reaching unreached people groups and engaging other worldviews. Christians who are in agreement with the Lausanne Covenant and committed to the task of evangelization are encouraged to be a part of the Lausanne Movement. Attending regional and international gatherings, being involved in collaborative evangelization initiatives, providing prayer and financial support all help multiply the work and vision of Lausanne, to the glory of God. Global LeadershipWith a vision fueled by the historic work of Lausanne and a passion energized by prayer, humility, study, partnership and hope, Lausanne is connecting established leaders and younger leaders so that their efforts together will result in men, women, young people and children everywhere having the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel.Through international and regional gatherings, the establishment of ongoing Working Groups, Networks and Senior Associates and the involvement of International Deputy Directors in strategic regions of the world, Lausanne provides trusted, servant leadership to the church worldwide. Global GatheringsThe involvement of 500 younger Christian leaders in the 2006 Lausanne Younger Leaders Gathering in Malaysia has served as a catalyst for regional and national gatherings that are helping identify and mobilize younger leaders for evangelization. Lausanne Global Connections gatherings also offer younger leaders the opportunity to continue to develop their leadership skills so that they will “live and lead like Jesus.” Marking the 100th anniversary of the historic 1910 Edinburgh World Missionary Conference, Lausanne will call together 4000 world Christian leaders for Lausanne III: Cape Town 2010, an International Congress on World Evangelization, 16-25 October 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa. Leaders will celebrate the remarkable gains made in the growth of the church in the last one hundred years, particularly in Africa, Latin America and Asia, and assess the challenges and setbacks the missionary movement has experienced since that time. Lausanne III will also energize new friendships, new partnerships and new ideas for sharing Christ throughout the world. Lausanne III in 2010 will be the largest gathering of Lausanne leaders since 1989.
