Welcome to the Caribbean. God is very much at work in this part of the world. Encircled by the Caribbean Sea, the Caribbean is a community of some 30 small developing nation-states and dependent territories in the middle of the Atlantic. As a distinct sub-region of the Americas, its lush, tropical environment is home to some 30 million people. If you travel throughout it’s amazingly rich, cultural and geographical landscape you cannot help but notice Christian churches. There is a church in every corner. Over the last few centuries Catholic and Protestant missionaries have made their mark on this region.

After the first Lausanne Congress in 1974, a Caribbean Congress on Evangelization (CONECAR) was established to take the work of the Lausanne moment forward in the region. Through the Evangelical Association of the Caribbean (EAC), this biennial congress has grown from strength to strength and gives effective support to the work of the Church in the region. The eighth CONECAR was held in Trinidad in 2007 and the next will be in Jamaica in 2009.

Throughout the region today, however, evangelism is in need of renewal. Given its long history in the region, it is time to renew the church’s commitment to the biblical mandate for evangelism. It is time to take the task of evangelization forward and envision the next generation. The Caribbean Church therefore looks forward with eager anticipation to the historic Lausanne III Congress in Cape Town, South Africa in 2010. Our prayer is that God would use that moment to launch a new wave of evangelization for all peoples, and stir such concern for the peoples of the Caribbean.
