International Orality Consultation

His Word must go beyond the printed page to oral media
By Durk Meijer, ION Associate Director for Operations

IONA group of Ifé people on their way home from working in the fields were attracted by the sounds of indigenous music nearby, and left the path to see what was happening. It was a cassette of Ifé music, so they all sat down to listen. Next they heard a tape of Christian testimonies in their language. When the batteries ran out, they didn't want to stop listening; they sent someone to the town to buy new batteries so they could hear more. As a result of these tapes, about a dozen Ifé people became Christians! The owner of the cassette was not even a Christian himself at that time; he had bought the tapes because they were the only ones that used his own language and music.

God yearns to touch minds and hearts with His life- changing message in whatever form it has to take. Therefore His Word must go beyond the printed page to oral media.

We invite you to attend the International Orality Network (ION) third International Consultation from September 13-15 in Anaheim, California, USA. The ION serves churches, denominations, mission agencies, and individuals committed to effective communication of the Good News to all people. This conference is the largest forum for the rapidly emerging field of ministry to oral communicators including ministry leaders, field practitioners, educators, pastors and interested lay people. For further information and online registration, go to www.oralbible.com.

The 2004 Forum for World Evangelization Issue Group on Making Disciples of Oral Learners has released its Lausanne Occasional Paper. The paper is posted on the Lausanne website as a PDF file.

Ethnê 06

Ethnê to Ethnê ... This generation!! A Global Movement and Gathering of Unreached People Group-passionate People, Churches, and Organizations.

The preparation and planning for Ethne 06, with 650 participants from all over the world, March 7-10, 2006 is moving forward. Pray for God's enabling and for His heart to be imparted through brochures, the Internet and a video. May the vision be spread everywhere and be used by Him to thrust forth many new labourers who labour together to see fruitful harvest among every tongue, tribe and nation across the globe.

The name of this movement is taken from Isaiah 66:19, the peoples, who are saved, bring the Gospel to people who do not know about the glory of God. This movement goes in line with the command of our LORD, To fulfill as quickly as possible the command of our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:6-11, by a definite attempt to evangelise the remaining unevangelized peoples of the earth before His return. Yet, after 25 years of much emphasis internationally on the remaining unevangelized peoples, over 27% of the world still has almost no access to the Good News.

Ethne 06 is connected with intercessory teams, who with urgency and faith, call on God to see a breakthrough in the effort to spread the Gospel to the remaining unevangelized peoples in this world. For more information please email 이 이메일 주소는 스팸머로부터 보호됩니다. 보시려면 자바스크립트를 활성화 하십시요

The Baptist World Congress

The Baptist World Congress is convened every five years by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA). More than 10,000 people from around the world are expected at this year's Congress, 27-31 July, in Birmingham, England. The theme is "Jesus Christ Living Water." The BWA was founded in 1905 in London, making the 2005 Congress the Alliance's Centenary Congress.

The Main Sessions from the Congress will be video-streamed on the Internet.

In 1990 the Congress was held in Seoul, Korea; in 1995 it was Buenos Aires, Argentina and in 2000 it was Melbourne, Australia.

The Godman

The Book of Hope International's new evangelistic tool made its premier in Argentina recently with incredible results. It's called "The Godman," a 3D animated film on the life of Christ that's geared toward kids. Book of Hope's Rob Hoskins says they blanketed an area with their Book of Hope distribution to get kids to the film showing. "We were able to reach in one neighborhood about 26,000 kids and invite them to the film at the end of the week. We had over 3,000 show up for the movie. And, of those 3,000 over 600 gave their hearts to Jesus Christ."

PRAISE AND PRAYER

By Glenda Weldon, Chair, Intercession Working Group

"And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne; and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God." Rev 8:3-4.

Brothers and sisters, let's come into His Presence with a deep sense of awe and wonder at what He has done for us in Jesus Christ our Saviour and with confidence that He hears and answers our prayers.

LCWE Committee
Praise God for:

  • The evidence of His continuing hand of blessing on the Lausanne movement around the world.
  • The new initiatives and fresh vision birthed though the 2004 Forum.
  • The opportunity to meet in Hong Kong to discuss and share insights and future plans for the work of Lausanne.

Younger Leaders Conference
Please pray for the following issues relating to this significant Conference being held in Sept/Oct next year:

  • Development of the program
  • Selection of participants
  • Resource people, experts in each area who are facilitators
  • Funding (No honorariums)
  • Program Planning Team - that their hearts and minds be together as they seek God and plan for the gathering

Eastern Europe
Please pray:

  • For churches and church leaders, that God will fill them with vision and His Spirit so that they can be effective witnesses for Him.
  • That God will send more desire for the church to share the Gospel with Muslims and all who do not know Him.
  • For Uzbeklistan. The Christians are going through a time of persecution. Pray especially for one pastor who has been ordered to stop organizing church meetings. He faces 3 to 8 years imprisonment if they continue to meet. The Bethany Protestant Church in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent is facing opposition from authorities for holding services. On June 10, two members were convicted for illegally teaching their faith.

South Asia
Please continue to pray for the victims of the Tsunami and for those who are working to rebuild their communities.

Adrian de Visser (LCWE International Deputy Director) sent this report of one such project: “The Burghers live close to the sea in the Eastern part of Sri Lanka in village called ‘DUTCH BAR.’ This community consisted of 260 families or 850 individuals. The Tsunami claimed 156 persons. We intend to build a complete integrated village to house all 256 families, establish a sewing center, Carpentry unit (they have basic skills in carpentry), a community hall and children's playground.”  Please join them in prayer for this project.

East Asia

Pray for the:

  • Translation and publication of LOPs by the Korea Lausanne Committee (They need to raise $30,000USD for this project.)
  • Newly appointed executive committee members of the Korea Lausanne Committee.
  • 2006 Asia Church Leaders Conference on Evangelism (ALCOE VI) in the Philippines.
  • Selection process of the Korean and Japanese young leaders attending 2006 Young Leaders conference on Evangelism.

Oceania

Please pray for Ross Clifford, the new Chair of Lausanne Australia.

Theology Working Group

Praise God for the appointment of Dr Chris Wright as Chair of the Theology Working Group.

Please pray:

  • That the Lord will give great wisdom in the choice of the right people to be considered and invited for the Working Group, and that a good team is assembled for the task of organizing the key theological consultations of the next five years.
  • That the team is given wisdom in identifying those issues, and those best able to reflect theologically on them, for the good of the whole Lausanne movement and beyond.
  • For a meeting that will take place in Seoul, South Korea together with the Korean Evangelical Theological Society (KETS) at the end of September.  It is a joint conference initiated by the KETS in cooperation with the Theological Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA).

Unreached People Groups

Please pray for:

  • The follow-up movement of Issue Group 6A, the Unreached Peoples: Ethnê to Ethnê in this generation. This has now become global movement and gathering of UPG-passionate people, churches, and organizations.
  • The preparation and planning of a meeting in March 7-10, 2006. The meeting will draw 650 participants from all over the world. Pray for God’s enabling and for His heart to be imparted through brochures, the Internet, many personal letters and contacts, and a video.  Pray also that will be spread far and wide and be used by Him to thrust forth many new labourers with connected intercessory teams who are ready to labour together to see fruitful harvest among every tongue, tribe and nation across the globe.

International Orality Network

Oral Learners have been identified as one of the largest people groups yet to be reached with the Gospel. The International Orality Network was formed by the merging of the Lausanne (Committee for World Evangelization) Task Force on Making Disciples of Oral Learners and the Oral Bible Network.  ION’s vision is “to make God’s Word available to all oral learners in culturally appropriate ways that enable church planting movements everywhere.”

Please pray for:

  • The Orality Conference scheduled for Anaheim CA September 13-15, 2005.
  • The Holy Spirit to empower and direct all those involved in the various committees working on in the organization, participant selection, public relations and promotion of this conference.
  • The Holy Spirit to inspire, equip and send people into this very needy area of ministry.

Tentmaking

Please pray for the Planning Committee meeting in Frankfurt Sept 9-11, and another larger meeting in Portugal Feb. 2-5, 2006

Research

Please pray for the next edition of Religious Trends No 5, subtitled "The future of the Church", which relates to the UK.  They have had endless problems with typesetting, including loss of entire disc with no back-up three months ago.  The info it contains is fairly grim but crucial if church leaders are to face the future.  The book outlines what will happen if nothing changes; Please pray that much will change in England!

Jewish Evangelism

  • The report from the issue group has now been published as Lausanne Occasional Paper No. 60 with the title Jewish Evangelism: A Call to the Church and printed in 4000. The copies have been distributed to individuals and organization all over the world. Plans are on their way to have it translated into German, French and Japanese.
  • Praise God for those who have already purchased copies and for those translating it to make it even more accessible to churches and mission leaders in their countries.
  • Pray that these copies will reach the hands of church leaders and key people all over and be an inspiration for those already involved in Jewish evangelism and get the interest of others and help them to see how sharing the gospel with the Jewish people can be part of their ministry as well.
  • Over the next months plans should be made for the next LCJE International conference to be held in Budapest in 2007. Pray for those responsible for guidance and for discernment to know what the relevant, helpful and timely issues are that should be taken up at the conference.

Ministry among people with Disabilities

Please pray for:

  • The disability ministry leaders who are already translating into Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese the Lausanne Occasional Paper on Disability Ministry from the Forum 2004.  This paper contains many practical ideas and powerful ministry models for pastors around the world to replicate in reaching disabled people for Christ in their countries.
  • God to give wisdom and words to the translators; ask Him to move more disability ministry leaders to translate the LOP into their respective languages.

Partnership and Collaboration
Please pray:

  • That God would give them wisdom and discernment as visionSynergy works with many different ministries to help them effectively collaborate on the Global Church's approach and work with Unreached People Groups.
  • As the Internet grows and hundreds of ministries try to use the web to win people to Christ, pray that they would learn to share ideas, best practices and collaborate for seed-sowing, evangelism and discipleship.
  • 2.5 billion people cannot read, yet we must learn how to adequately share the Gospel with them.  Pray that all the organizations within the "orality" movement would learn to work together.

Filipino International Network (FIN)

Please pray for:

  • FIN International Coordinator, Joy Tira who has been in hospital.
  • FIN-sponsored NLTC training among Nazarene Church leaders in Alcala, Pangasinan, Philippines.  Pray that this training will result in church workers who are better equipped in evangelism, in turn resulting in Filipino Christians who are trained to share their faith wherever God will "scatter" them.  This is part of FIN's initiative to help equip the Filipino Church in evangelism – as thousands of Filipinos, approximately 7% of which are Evangelical Christians leave the Philippines as “Overseas Filipino Workers" everyday.
