EUROPEAN EVANGELICALS MEET IN PORTUGAL

European Evangelicals meeting in October were challenged to live out their "true identities" as "Christian nobodies" by becoming God's catalysts for change.

During their annual meeting in Tavira, Portugal, the European Christians also set an agenda for the future and welcomed new members.

The four-day gathering in Tavira, Portugal focused on the theme, "Gospel Relevance in Europe Today," and gave the continent's top Evangelical leaders a chance to reflect, bond, pray, renew their faith, and share their stories.

"Christendom is dead, and thank God," said Gordon Showell-Rogers, General Secretary of the European Evangelical Alliance, during the closing session of the joint EEA, European Evangelical Missionary Alliance (EEMA) and Hope for Europe conference.

"Europe desperately needs God to visit us and for God’s people to live as God’s people."

"As a group of evangelical Christian leaders, we have benefited greatly from being together and thinking about our respective responsibilities in Europe," said Showell-Rogers. "Our hope is that what's happened (here) might become strategic for the welfare of European society."

Empowering Men and Women to use their gifts together in advancing the Gospel
By Mimi Haddad

Let the whole church, take the whole Gospel, to the whole world! This challenge compels us to consider how men and women might develop and use their God-given gifts, revealing together, the Gospel of Christ. Missions and evangelism is the work of all of God’s people. Christian men and women have been gifted and called to serve, and now we ask; how do we work together?

More than at any other time in history, Christians around the globe are rigorously examining the biblical message regarding gender and Christian service. As a result, there is a burgeoning of literature and discussion among evangelicals at a global level. Consequently, the Lausanne 2004 Forum for World Evangelization provided nearly fifty evangelical leaders, from more than a dozen countries, the opportunity to exchange ideas and identify ways men and women might together advance the Gospel.

Following the 2004 Forum in Thailand, Issue Group 24 compiled an Occasional Paper (No. 53) that assesses the ministry of men and women from a biblical, theological, historical, socio/psychological, and missiological perspective. We asked critical questions such as, Is ministry gift-based, rather than gender-based? We also considered the important issue of abuse and offered strategies for preventing physical, emotional and sexual abuse. We also considered those who hold differing perspectives on this significant issue. Research papers and case studies are included within our Occasional Paper which is now available in book format and on interactive CDROM. The CDROM includes video clips from our two main stage presentations in Thailand. To order these resources, please contact www.cbeinternational.org.

The Spirit worked mightily in our Issue Group while in Thailand, as we made two presentations from the main stage and offered the following declaration to the Church.

Issue Group 24 Declaration:
In order that the whole Church may take the whole Gospel to the whole world, we, Lausanne Issue Group 24 “Empowering Men and Women for Ministry,” affirm that more labourers, both men and women, must be released to exercise their God-given gifts for ministry and leadership. More than half of the body of Christ are women who are the most undervalued and under-utilized resource of the Church.
At this critical time, the Church urgently needs to empower the ministry of women and men in full partnership. We recognize that the Bible teaches that women and men are equally:

  • Created in God’s image and likeness and entrusted with dominion.
  • Redeemed through the death of Christ.
  • Gifted for ministry by the Holy Spirit.
  • Called to ministry and servant leadership.
  • Held responsible for using their gifts to advance the Kingdom of God.

As the Church, we need to:

  • Repent of anything that devalues either women or men.
  • Embrace the teaching and example of Jesus regarding women and men and the Spirit-given basis for all ministry.
  • Affirm the biblical basis for the equal value of men and women in advancing the Gospel.
  • Pray that God will break the barriers that inhibit ministry and build bridges that enable authentic partnership.
  • Model, promote, and celebrate mutuality in ministry.
  • Invest resources that advance gift-based rather than gender-based ministry.

Praise & Prayer

By Sarah Plummer, Intercessory Working Group, Oceania

In Romans 8:22 we read "We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of child birth right up to this present time."

The pains of child birth only intensify as the birth approaches and endurance and perseverance come because you look forward to what is to come. As we stand in Christ in this very context of the whole creation groaning, let us look forward with a living and sure hope of what is to come, the birth of the New Heaven and New Earth with Christ.

  • Please pray for El Salvador ... that country has been severely damaged by tropical storms and hurricanes and there are thousands of people without homes and food. The many earthquake-damaged nations have experienced continual aftershocks and those seeking to recover and rebuild are having difficulty.
  • Please pray for Christians facing extreme persecution in Alexandria, Egypt at this present time.
  • Pray the church will rise up to the task of Holistic Evangelization before them, as it is not going to get any easier.
  • Pray for the current young church leadership as they seek to come together for the Younger Leaders Gathering O6. Pray for the selection process of delegates and mentors.
  • Pray for the continued communication of all we received at the Lausanne 2004 Forum, that the local church and the average Christian will be empowered in their role of taking "the whole gospel to the whole world."
Pray that we will all continue to spend time with our Risen Lord not just work for him.
