Lausanne Connecting Point - June 2009

In This Issue:

Towards 2010 Blog

Jetlag.  Surely jetlag was a product of the Fall of mankind.  And surely jetlag won't exist when we enjoy the new heavens and the new earth.  Maybe we'll just close our eyes, think of a place, and be there.  Fully there - not just in body but in mind and spirit.  No waking up at 2 am on the new earth because you went to join the Aussie heavenly skydiving team down under (or would it be up over?)  Until then jetlag will continue to be the bane of existence for missionaries (and other world travelers).  Jetlag and the multiplicity of languages which the Bible assures us is CERTAINLY a product of fallenness!

So yes, as I write, I’m suffering from the out-of-body experience called jetlag having flown from Japan to America just a few days ago.  A few days earlier I enjoyed the jetlag-free 100 minute flight from Seoul to Nagoya after finishing up a truly blessed week in Seoul for the Lausanne Biennial Leadership Meeting.  Nearly 200 leaders from the Lausanne Board and Cape Town 2010 Committees to various Working Group members gathered together from around the world to pray, study the Word, sing, eat, plan, and fellowship together in preparation for Cape Town 2010.

WEA Sri Lanka Statement

WEAThe International Director of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) has called on Christians worldwide to help the Sri Lankan church meet the overwhelming humanitarian crisis affecting their country.

The aftermath of Sri Lanka’s three decade old armed conflict has displaced more than 300,000 people who are desperately in need of food, medical assistance and other basic needs.  They include malnourished children, pregnant and lactating mothers and the elderly.

“Despite being a small minority, the Christian community is valiantly and sacrificially giving to meet these needs, but urgently requires assistance from their brothers and sisters elsewhere in the world if they are to complete their task”, said Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe, of the WEA.  “The church is called to be salt and light and rarely have I seen such dedication in extending God’s love to non-Christian communities, despite logistical difficulties and real personal danger to themselves.”

Tunnicliffe travelled to Sri Lanka, from 1-6 June, with an international delegation of Christian leaders and diplomats in order to meet with a wide range of faith, civil society and political leaders.

The National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL), the Sri Lankan chapter of the WEA, is presently feeding over 10,000 people every day at a cost of US$1.50 per person per day for basic food.  However there are many thousands who still need food and no one is sure how long it will be before the government is able to allow the displaced Sri Lankans to return home

FOBA Launches Find A Bible Website

By Kim Priore

Find a BibleThe Forum of Bible Agencies International (FOBA‐I) has launched a new website that gives easy access to Scripture in more than 3000 languages. FindABible.net is the first centralized global resource that provides access to the many Scripture products available around the world.  With just the name of a language, a user can now access a simple search to find existing products in that language.

Why Find A Bible?
The Find A Bible Project is one of the strategic global initiatives undertaken by Forum members in alliance with one another as a way to maximize the access and impact of God’s word around the world.  It is the most comprehensive list of majority and minority language Scriptures in existence.  The site provides links for access to resources including Bibles, New Testaments, and Scripture portions in print, audio and visual formats.

Prior to the release of FindABible.net, people wishing to find Scripture in a particular language had to browse through a variety of web sites that offered a limited number of Scripture products for purchase or online viewing.  Users had to guess which agency might have the product, then contact them to find out if it even existed and how to obtain a copy.  Now, through FindABible.net, with just the name of a language and a click of the mouse, links to Scripture products are within reach.

Many Scripture products noted on the site have never before been listed on the web.  Through FindABible.net, users now have a single point of access to Forum member agency websites where they can download, view, or listen to these products.

In addition, the global community is growing ever more dependent on the Internet.  If a web search for a Bible in a given language turns up nothing, or turns up a translation but offers no way to obtain it, people will assume it does not exist, and give up trying.  Recognizing this gap, and utilizing the latest technology, the Forum mounted an unprecedented data collection effort and built a website that opens up a new wealth of information to the general public.

Praise & Prayer

By Sarah Plummer, Chair of the Lausanne Intercession Working Group

Pray God would enable wise implementation of the many resolutions made during the recent Lausanne Biennial Leadership Meeting in Seoul, Korea.  Pray for the teams in the Cape Town 2010 (CT2010) Participant Selection Committees in each region that God may give them wisdom, clarity and unity as they process each applicant.

Praise God for our Lausanne/CT2010 Communications team.  Praise God for the new look of the Lausanne and CT2010 websites - www.lausanne.org and www.capetown2010.com - and the very talented and gifted people working in this team.  May God raise up the Lausanne Global Conversation to such a fervour of his love through their hard work and service.

Pray for the online connections to the Congress through the Cape Town GlobaLink.  Pray for all the infrastructure needs, the technology and the capacity to truly be a Global consultation to the praise and glory of God.

Pray for the many planning to have mission exchange teams with Africa next year through Mission Africa.  We pray for those churches keen to send evangelists.  We ask that God would make each mission extend his Kingdom with his power, mercy, grace and love.  May each African evangelist who is sent back impact each community with the precious Good news of Jesus Christ again in power, mercy, grace and love.

Pray about the battle we wage, our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  May we stand our ground, stand firm with feet fitted with readiness that comes from the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:12-14).

Pray for the Lausanne Theology Working Group as they seek to bring God’s word in season to the Body of Christ.  Together may we celebrate the giftedness of the leaders God is using around the world.
