Lausanne Bi-Annual Leadership Meeting

Report from Doug Birdsall

We are eagerly looking forward to the Lausanne Bi-Annual Leadership Meeting in Budapest, 18-22 June.  I am pleased to tell you that we now have over 300 leaders from 60 countries who will be attending.  Please pray with us that God will guide and bless our time as we work together to advance the cause of world evangelization and the plans for Lausanne III: Cape Town 2010.

The Lausanne Bi-Annual Leadership Meeting will be a wonderful time of interacting with our brothers and sisters around the world who share the vision of Lausanne for “the whole church taking the whole Gospel to the whole World.”

The Budapest meeting is designed to gain input from every leader in attendance; as leaders share their thoughts, prayers and dreams for Lausanne and Lausanne III.  Throughout our time together, it’s our desire to seek God’s heart for reaching our World with the Gospel.

We’ll begin our focus everyday with a Bible reading from leaders such as Ajith Fernando (National Director of Youth for Christ, Sri Lanka), Lindsay Brown (Lausanne International Director and General Secretary of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, UK), Ivor Poobalan (Principal of Colombo Theological Seminary, Sri Lanka) and Charlie Hadjiev (a DPhil Student at Oxford University).

Bishop Hwa Yung (The Methodist Church of Malaysia), Chairman of the Lausanne III Participant Selection Committee, will lead our discussion on choosing who will be invited to participate in Lausanne III onsite in Cape Town.

Ramez Atallah (Director of the Bible Society of Egypt), Chairman of the Programme Planning Committee, will guide our discussion on the programme for Lausanne III; seeing Lausanne III as not only an event but also as a catalyst to stimulate a process which begins now and continue beyond 2010.

Steve Woodworth (President of Masterworks, US), Chairman of the Lausanne Communications Working Group, will give an overview of the communications opportunities and needs for Lausanne III.

We’ll also hear from:

  • Todd Johnson, Research Fellow at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Chairman of the Lausanne Researcher’s Network
  • Paul Eshleman, Vice President of Campus Crusade for Christ and Chairman of the Lausanne Strategy Working Group
  • Chris Wright, International Director of Langham Partnership International and Chairman of the Lausanne Theology Working Group
  • Blair Carlson, President of GoodWord Partnership and Lausanne III Congress Director
  • And Others

HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED
Your support of this meeting is crucial.  Would you consider doing the following?

Thank you in advance for your prayers for the Lausanne Bi-Annual Leadership Meeting in Budapest.  I look forward to sharing a report from the meeting with you next month!

Global Pentecostalism Book To Be Released

Global PentecostalismDr. Tetsunao “Ted” Yamamori, former International Director of the Lausanne Movement and a Lausanne Senior Advisor, will release a new book in September titled GLOBAL PENTECOSTALISM.

Here’s a brief description of the book:

“How and why is Christianity's center of gravity shifting to the developing world?  To understand this rapidly growing phenomenon, Donald E. Miller and Tetsunao Yamamori spent four years traveling the globe conducting extensive on-the-ground research in twenty different countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

The result is this vividly detailed book and accompanying DVD, which together contain the most comprehensive information available on Pentecostalism, the fastest-growing religion in the world. Rich with scenes from everyday life, the book and DVD dispel many stereotypes about this religion as they build a wide-ranging, nuanced portrait of a major new social movement. The DVD features footage of Pentecostal religious worship, testimony, and social activism, and includes interviews with Pentecostal pastors and leaders from around the world.”

The book is co-authored by Miller, Professor of Religion and Executive Director of the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California, and Yamamori, President Emeritus of Food for the Hungry International and Senior Fellow of the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California.

Lausanne World Pulse

Communication—whether in-person or via Internet, telephone or email—is a necessary element in the unity of the global Church and the mission to share the message of Christ with those who have not heard.  In a day when millions of people use email, telephone and other technology, understanding the whole of communications and the means and methods of communicating is important.  This issue of Lausanne World Pulse focuses on International Communication and the Church.  Here are some of articles you will find:

• “We should never ignore the power of the Holy Spirit in overcoming communication barriers and boundaries in order to share the gospel,” according to Andrew Sundar, director of the Media Resources Group-Asia for Trans World Radio.

• “How do we capture the richness of the ‘intellectual capital’ God is giving his global Church each day?  Then, how do we share it, learn from it and do better because of more effective sharing among leaders?” asks Phill Butler, director of visionSynergy.

• “Since the communication landscape is fast becoming more mobile, it is up to more churches and ministries to harness this ‘technological bronco’ that is the mobile Internet and purposefully ride it to meet the spiritual needs of the mobile if we are going to be effective in reaching this postmodern age with the gospel,” writes Jonathan Petersen, director of Internet Marketing at Zondervan.

• “The ultimate goal of communication is God’s glory, and the ultimate subject of our communication is the magnalia Dei, God’s mighty acts,” says Steve Knight, international communication coordinator for Serving In Mission (SIM).

COMING IN JULY
To facilitate effective missions and evangelism, proper education and training is needed.  To this end, our July issue will include a challenge to rethink pastoral leadership training, an overview of missionary training resources, the passion needed for missions training and a case study of one training institute that is producing world leaders in missions and evangelism.
